Crown moulding profiles range from a simple cove with a flat fillet to complex built-up assemblies with multiple members stacked to create a face height of five or six inches. Formal dining rooms, libraries, and entry foyers with ceiling heights above nine feet can accommodate the larger built-up profiles without feeling heavy. Standard-height rooms call for a simpler crown — typically a single member in the 3.5 to 4.5 inch range — that adds presence without competing with the room. We size the profile for your ceiling height and room dimensions, not for what happens to be in stock.
Door and window casing is where the character of the home's interior is most visible because it appears at every opening throughout the house. Colonial casing with a back band creates a traditional look. Craftsman casing with a flat head casing and corner blocks reads as period-appropriate in bungalows and arts-and-crafts homes. Contemporary casing — clean, minimal, shadow-line reveals — works with modern interiors. Whatever the profile, we mill it consistently and install it with tight joints at every corner and return.
Base moulding and base cap work the same way: the profile needs to be sized for the room, consistent throughout the floor, and installed with precise miters and returns at inside and outside corners. California's older homes frequently have settled walls with irregular profiles at the floor line — we scribe base moulding to the wall so there are no gaps, rather than caulking the gap and hoping paint covers it.
Built-ins and bookcases are designed and built as architectural elements, not furniture placed against a wall. We frame and case them so they read as part of the room's structure, with profiles matching the crown and base moulding already in the space. Historic profile matching for renovation and addition projects is something we do frequently — California's older homes often have moulding profiles that haven't been in standard production for decades, and we can reproduce them from a sample or photograph.
Why Solid Wood Trim Is Worth the Difference
- — Hand-fitted corners scribe to irregular walls. Older California homes rarely have perfectly plumb and flat walls. Foam and MDF moulding is rigid — it either gaps at the wall or cracks when bent to follow an irregular surface. Solid wood can be back-cut, scribed, and fitted to the actual wall profile so the joint is tight without caulk holding it together.
- — Profile matched to existing moulding for additions and renovations. When a room addition or renovation needs to match existing trim that was installed decades ago, we reproduce the profile from the original moulding rather than substituting a close approximation. The difference is visible — the matched profile reads as continuous, the approximation doesn't.
- — Solid wood takes stain and paint finishes MDF cannot match long-term. MDF accepts paint well initially, but it swells at the edges over time when exposed to humidity, and it doesn't refinish cleanly. Solid wood can be sanded, restained, or repainted through multiple finish cycles over the life of the home without losing integrity or profile detail.

Consultation
We visit your home, assess the rooms and ceiling heights, review any existing moulding, and discuss style goals. For renovation projects, we examine the existing profiles before recommending a path forward.
Design
We sketch profile options, confirm which rooms are in scope, and finalize wood species and finish. For built-ins, we produce detailed shop drawings before any wood is cut.
Build
Profiles are milled in our shop to exact dimension. Built-in casework is assembled in the shop and fitted on-site. For matched moulding, profiles are reproduced from the original before installation begins.
Finish
Stain, paint, or clear-coat applied in multiple coats with sanding between each. For paint-grade trim, we prime in the shop and finish in place after installation so joints and nail holes are incorporated into the final coat.
Install
We install every piece of trim, fit corners precisely, and leave the room ready for paint or stain touch-up. Built-ins are anchored to the wall structure, scribed to the floor and ceiling, and fitted with hardware as specified.
